The security situation along the Egypt-Sudan border has reached a boiling point as Cairo takes aggressive action to dismantle illicit artisanal mining camps. According to the Khartoum-based Emergency Lawyers group, air strikes targeted these mining sites on Saturday, resulting in significant casualties among those operating in the region.
While international activists are quick to label these operations as violations of sovereignty, the reality is that these remote border areas have become hubs for illegal activity, including smuggling and the extraction of gold that potentially funds insurgent groups.
Egypt has made it clear that it will not tolerate the proliferation of illicit mining that threatens its own gold market and border security. In June, the Egyptian border agency reported the seizure of 86 tonnes of gold ore, underscoring the massive scale of the illegal trade occurring in the region.
As Sudan remains mired in a brutal civil war, the porous border has become a conduit for illicit goods and dangerous smuggling routes. Egypt’s military campaign is a necessary response to secure its territory and prevent the destabilizing effects of illegal mining and cross-border criminal networks from spilling over into its own sovereign lands.
