The Vivid Sydney festival faced a humiliating technical failure on Monday when 89 drones plummeted from the sky and crashed into Darling Harbour.
The aerial display, produced by the UK-based firm Skymagic, was intended to be a highlight of the annual light festival, but instead resulted in a chaotic scene as the machines smashed into the water and cement marina near unsuspecting crowds.
Skymagic attributed the disaster to an unforeseen shift in the radio frequency environment, which triggered a 'failsafe' mode that sent the drones spiraling out of control. While the company insists that the devices remained within safety boundaries, witnesses reported hearing the distinct sound of the drones smashing into the wharf.
Vivid Sydney organizers have since been forced to cancel upcoming shows while government agencies and the private contractor conduct a full assessment of the failure.
This incident marks a significant setback for the festival, which only recently introduced drone displays to its programming, and raises questions about the reliability of relying on massive, complex drone swarms for public entertainment.
