The Hong Kong Correctional Services Department has been forced to pull the plug on an AI-generated video meant to highlight the dangers of drug abuse. Released on June 26 to coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the video attempted to utilize modern K-pop aesthetics to reach a younger audience.

However, the attempt at a high-tech approach backfired, as the department faced immediate backlash from critics who argued that the AI-generated visuals made the illicit substances look more appealing than dangerous.

In an era where government agencies are increasingly experimenting with artificial intelligence to streamline communications, this incident serves as a reminder that technological shortcuts are no substitute for sound judgment.

The department has since removed the content, acknowledging that the attempt to use trendy production values to combat the scourge of drug trafficking failed to hit the mark.
