Democrat Jon Ossoff has been projected to win re-election to the U.S. Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins.

Despite Georgia voting for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, Ossoff managed to hold the seat, a victory that party insiders are already using to fuel speculation regarding his potential ambitions for the 2028 presidential race.

Throughout the campaign, Ossoff focused heavily on the cost of living, while simultaneously leveling attacks against corporate interests and the previous administration. His opponent, Mike Collins, centered his platform on defending the economic policies of the Trump era and criticizing the fiscal failures of the Biden administration.

The race saw Republicans shift resources to other competitive contests as polling indicated Ossoff maintained a consistent lead. Governor Brian Kemp, who had been viewed by many as the strongest potential challenger, declined to enter the race, leading to widespread speculation that he was wary of Ossoff’s political momentum.

While Ossoff has publicly denied interest in a 2028 presidential bid, his victory in a state that has historically leaned red suggests he will remain a central figure in Democratic politics as the party looks toward the future of the Trump presidency.
