A catastrophic fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright has claimed the lives of four soldiers and left dozens more injured, marking a dark day for the Canadian Armed Forces. The incident occurred on Saturday during high-intensity combat training involving live munitions.
According to Maj-Gen Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division, the fire moved with terrifying speed, covering a kilometer in as little as 30 to 60 seconds after a sudden wind shift. The victims have been identified as Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding, and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark.
Of the 39 individuals hospitalized, at least 19 remain in critical condition, straining local medical facilities. While the base had been aware of a fire on the premises for several hours, officials had initially determined that training could continue.
Despite speculation regarding nearby oil and gas infrastructure, authorities have explicitly ruled out such facilities as the cause, nor is there any indication of terrorist activity. With wind gusts in the region reaching up to 90km/h on the day of the incident, the investigation into the exact cause of the blaze is expected to take at least a month.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has acknowledged the severity of the loss, which stands as one of the most significant peacetime tragedies for the Canadian military.
