The culture of entitlement within Colombia’s left-wing administration has reached a breaking point as prosecutors formally charged Laura Sarabia, a former foreign minister and top aide to President Gustavo Petro, with abuse of power.
The charges stem from a 2023 scandal where Sarabia, then serving as Petro’s chief of staff, allegedly weaponized state police to interrogate her own nanny, Marelbys Meza, following the disappearance of cash from her private residence.
Meza reported being taken by a driver to an official building near the presidential palace—an experience she described as feeling like a kidnapping—where she was subjected to a polygraph examination by police officers.
Prosecutors argue this was a clear-cut case of a high-ranking official misusing state resources and law enforcement personnel for a personal matter entirely unrelated to her government duties. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Sarabia has denied any wrongdoing, hiding behind legal counsel and claiming respect for the judicial process.
This incident highlights the arrogance of an administration that treats state assets as personal tools, forcing taxpayers to bankroll the private security and investigative whims of political elites.
Sarabia, who previously resigned in the wake of the scandal only to be later appointed as foreign minister and ambassador to the UK, remains a central figure in the Petro administration’s ongoing ethical controversies.
