Kenyan Court Slaps Ant Smuggler With Prison Time

A Chinese national learned the hard way that wildlife trafficking has consequences after attempting to smuggle thousands of ants out of Kenya.

The rule of law prevailed in Nairobi this week as a Chinese national, Zhang Kequn, was sentenced to one year in prison for attempting to smuggle over 2,000 live queen garden ants out of Kenya. Zhang, who was apprehended at the airport in March, was also hit with a 1 million Kenyan shilling fine.

Judge Irene Gichobi rightly noted that the defendant lacked remorse and was not entirely honest throughout the proceedings. This operation highlights a growing black market where these insects are sold to collectors in Asia and Europe for hundreds of dollars apiece.

Judge Gichobi emphasized the necessity of a stiff deterrent to combat the rising tide of wildlife trafficking and the resulting ecological damage. While Zhang’s defense team plans to appeal the sentence, the court’s decision to prioritize environmental protection and national sovereignty is a welcome shift.

Zhang, who purchased the ants from a local accomplice named Charles Mwangi, will be deported to China upon the completion of his sentence. This case follows a similar crackdown last year, proving that Kenyan authorities are increasingly serious about shutting down those who seek to exploit their natural resources for profit.
