The Chinese government is scrambling to contain a public health crisis after video evidence confirmed that wholesalers have been dipping cabbages into formaldehyde—a known carcinogen—to keep the produce looking fresh during transport.
The footage, first exposed by an environmental blogger, shows individuals in Hebei province treating the vegetables with the toxic chemical, which is strictly prohibited for food use.
China, the world's largest producer of cabbage, churns out over 30 million tonnes of the vegetable annually, exporting a significant portion to neighbors including Vietnam, South Korea, and Russia.
While state media and local authorities in Kangbao county are now promising strict enforcement and market spot checks to restore confidence, the incident highlights the dangerous disregard for consumer safety in a supply chain driven by immediate profit.
The People's Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, admitted that these wholesalers 'crossed a legal red line and breached the moral bottom line.' As police take legal action against the individuals involved, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the lack of oversight in a global food supply chain that relies heavily on a nation where basic safety standards are frequently sacrificed for economic gain.
