A horrific blaze tore through a foster care facility in the Mohammadia suburb of Algiers early Thursday morning, resulting in the deaths of eleven people. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed that children were among the victims of the fire, which began around 3:30 local time.
Emergency responders deployed ten fire engines and 16 ambulances to the scene, successfully evacuating five individuals with special needs to safety. While the exact cause of the facility fire remains under investigation, the incident occurs against the backdrop of a severe heatwave that has triggered nearly 1,000 fires across Algeria in the past week alone.
Civil protection officials reported battling 115 wildfires in the last 24-hour period. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb has visited survivors in local hospitals as the nation grapples with the aftermath of this disaster.
