The Board of Peace is ramping up pressure on Israel to accept a phased disarmament roadmap for Gaza, even as the Jewish state maintains its firm stance that Hamas must be completely stripped of its military capabilities before any withdrawal can be considered.
Nickolay Mladenov, the Board’s high representative for Gaza, warned the UN Security Council that the current ceasefire is fragile, claiming that any collapse would lead to a 'point of no return.' Despite Mladenov’s push for a reciprocal, sequenced process, Israel remains steadfast in its position that disarmament is a non-negotiable prerequisite.
Israeli officials have made it clear that they cannot risk a withdrawal while Hamas continues to maintain tunnels, weapons caches, and military infrastructure. The conflict, sparked by the barbaric Hamas-led massacre on October 7, 2023, has left Israel in a position where it must prioritize its national security over the demands of international mediators.
While Mladenov criticized the ongoing Israeli military actions, he also acknowledged that Hamas has failed to meet its own commitments to cease military activities, including the continued operation of tunnels and obstruction of aid.
As the international community debates the mechanics of the roadmap, Israel’s position remains rooted in the reality that a terrorist organization cannot be trusted to govern or disarm voluntarily.
The Israeli representative to the UN reiterated that the government is committed to the ceasefire framework, but emphasized that success is impossible so long as Hamas remains an armed threat to the Israeli people.
