The BBC is doubling down on its legal confrontation with Donald Trump, attempting to force his family members to testify in a $10 billion defamation lawsuit.
The network, which previously issued an apology for deceptively editing a speech given by the former president, is now targeting Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner for documents and testimony.
Trump’s legal team has slammed the move, accusing the British state-funded broadcaster of attempting to harass the president’s family and abuse the deposition process to distract from their own clear liability.
The lawsuit centers on a Panorama episode that spliced together segments of a speech to create a false impression of incitement—a move the BBC admitted was an error but now claims does not meet the threshold for defamation.
Despite the BBC’s attempt to paint the family as having 'personal knowledge' of the president's intentions, the legal pursuit appears to be a fishing expedition. Representatives for the network have complained about difficulties in serving the subpoenas, including being turned away by Secret Service agents and building staff.
As the case crawls toward a 2027 trial date, the BBC continues to struggle with the fallout of its own editorial malpractice while attempting to drag the Trump family into the fray.
