California’s Radical Wealth Tax Threatens to Drive Out Job Creators

California is doubling down on its failed economic model with Proposition 40, a radical proposal that would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of the state’s billionaires.

Proponents, including labor unions and far-left politicians like Bernie Sanders, are framing this as a necessary measure to backfill state healthcare budgets, yet the reality is a desperate attempt to extract more wealth from the very people who drive the state’s economy. The measure has already sparked a predictable reaction: capital flight.

High-profile entrepreneurs, including Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, and former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, have already packed their bags to escape the state’s hostile tax environment.

Even those remaining, like Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, are forced to navigate complex corporate maneuvers just to mitigate the damage of such confiscatory policies. While supporters claim this is about 'fairness,' the historical precedent in Europe shows that wealth taxes suppress investment, stifle growth, and ultimately fail to generate the revenue promised.

By targeting the state's most successful residents, California is effectively telling job creators they are not wanted, further cementing its reputation as a state that prioritizes ideological punishment over economic common sense.
