In a move reflecting the Trump administration's firm stance on national sovereignty and trade, Apple and Google have updated their mapping platforms to label Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for users within the United States.
This change follows an executive order from President Trump, which directed the Department of the Interior to update official geographic designations following the collapse of trade negotiations with Canada.
The administration recently imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration rejected what they termed unacceptable trade demands.
While the tech giants have moved to align their platforms with U.S. government data, Canadian officials and the Ontario provincial government have publicly rejected the change, with Premier Doug Ford installing signage to assert the traditional name.
This is not the first time the administration has utilized such measures to assert American interests; both Apple and Google previously redesignated the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' for U.S. users following a similar presidential directive in 2025.
While some smaller mapping services have resisted the change, the major tech platforms continue to update their software to reflect the administration’s official geographic designations.
