The era of unchecked demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has come to an end. Delhi Police have officially denotified the 18th-century observatory site as a designated protest zone, effectively clearing the area near the nation’s parliament.
The decision follows a period of escalating disruption, including a massive rally led by the 'Cockroach Janta Party' that resulted in the resignation of a federal minister, and subsequent attempts by the same group to target the nation's election chief.
In response to the growing unrest, police have barricaded the area and deployed paramilitary personnel to ensure the site remains clear. Protesters are now being directed to three alternative venues, including the Ramlila Ground, where organizers must navigate formal booking processes and facility fees.
While some activists complain that the new rules make it more difficult to stage long-term sit-ins, the move aligns with guidance from the Supreme Court to identify locations with adequate infrastructure for public gatherings.
For years, Jantar Mantar served as a magnet for various interest groups, but the government is now prioritizing the security and functionality of the capital over the convenience of those seeking to occupy public space near the halls of power.
